With a custom steel staircase, you can look forward to outstanding strength, great design versatility and incredible durability.
With steel’s high strength-to-weight ratio, you also achieve sleek modern profiles that simply wouldn’t be possible with other materials such as wood or concrete, while enjoying a minimalist, elegant aesthetic.
These models fit non-standard spaces with ease and are almost maintenance-free. It’s also possible to combine steel with other premium materials.
Finally, if your staircase is powder-coated or galvanised, flawless performance both indoors and outside means there’s no need for constant painting or resealing.
If you’re fitting a bespoke set of stairs as a homeowner, you’ll have a number of key decisions to make, including:
1. Finishing the surface of your steel staircase
Raw steel needs to be treated to avoid corrosion and to get the colour and texture you want.
Options include:
- Powder coating: This is the most popular choice for indoor models and means you spray the steel with a dry powder before it is baked. You can then have any colour to match your interior.
- Galvanised: This is the ideal choice for a setting with more rigorous demands, such as a fire escape or outdoor staircase.
2. What could railings and treads be made from?
The core structure of the staircase is the stringer. This is generally made from steel.
For the railings, we can offer multiple options, from glass to steel.
The balustrades and treads (the bit you step on) determine the overall feel of your staircase.
The treads, just like railings, have many options: warm woods, steel, glass, stone.
You could combine a steel stringer with treads in warm woods such as walnut or oak, and this is very popular. You could also opt for stone or glass, with the former bringing solidity and the latter lightness.
See photos below for examples of some of the staircases we have made recently.

3. The best staircase configuration
The best structural shape for your stairs will be determined by your floor plan, the height of your ceiling and the spatial flow you want. Here are some of the options:
· Straight: This common choice is both simple and cost-effective. Ideal if you’re going for open-plan living or a minimalist look.
· Spiral: This will look amazing in loft or apartment settings or more compact spaces where floor space may be restricted. You still get to make an architectural statement.
· L and U-shaped: This incorporates turns at a 90 or 180° angle. It’s great if you’re breaking up long flights of stairs or have a multi-storey layout.
4. Safety and regulatory compliance
At Two J’s Metalwork, our knowledgeable design team will work with your architect to ensure quality and compliance with regulations are met.
Of course, the last thing you want is for your steel staircase to be unsafe, especially if you have children, pets, someone who is older or anyone who may otherwise be vulnerable at home.
