Discover how Two J’s Metalwork designed, fabricated and installed bespoke steelwork for the construction of a new hospital unit at St George’s Hospital, London.
Building the Foundations of Better Healthcare
At Two J’s Metalwork, we take pride in being involved in projects that make a real difference. Our work at St George’s Hospital in London is a great example of this, where we played a key role in the construction of a brand-new hospital unit.
This wasn’t simply a steel fabrication project. It was about creating safe, reliable and long-lasting structures that will support patients, visitors and healthcare professionals for many years to come.
From the earliest construction stages through to the installation of steelwork, our team managed every aspect of the fabrication and site fitting, ensuring quality and precision at every step.
The Challenge
Constructing a new hospital unit requires exceptional attention to detail. Every structural element must meet strict safety standards while supporting a busy healthcare environment where reliability is critical.
The project was delivered over multiple phases, with each stage presenting its own technical challenges. Our role was to provide expertly fabricated steelwork that not only met the engineering requirements but also helped keep the build progressing efficiently.
What We Delivered
Our team fabricated and installed a wide range of steelwork throughout the project, including:
Intumescent Painted Structural Steel beams
Bespoke Staircase Design and Installation
Plant deck walkway and ladder, tower and access gate
Phase 1: Intumescent Painted Structural Steel beams and posts
During the first phase of the project we fabricated and applied intumescent paint to structural steelwork at our workshop before transporting the beams and posts to London, ready for our on site fitting team to crane them into place for installation into the concreate pads to carry modules going above.
This provided vital structural support and helped lay the foundations for the new hospital building.
What is intumescent paint?
Intumescent paint is a specialist coating which provides enhanced fire protection by expanding up to 50 times their thickness when exposed to extreme heat. The protective layer helps insulate the steel, delaying structural failure and giving occupants valuable extra time to evacuate safely in the event of a fire.
Phase 2: Bespoke Staircase Design and Installation
The next phase of the project was designing and installing several staircases across different modules.
The main criteria for designing the staircases was to be fire safe and DDA Compliant this means they are wide enough that if there was an emergency at the hospital it could fit a large footfall down the staircase and hospital beds, meaning no one gets left behind.
One of the key staircase was fully fabricated in our workshop before being transported to Hull, where our experienced fitting team assembled it. From there, it was delivered to St George’s Hospital and lifted directly into position by crane.
Completing as much work as possible off-site reduced installation time on site, improved efficiency and ensured the staircase was installed accurately with minimal disruption to the wider construction programme.
It’s this level of planning and attention to detail that helps create healthcare environments that are both practical and safe.

Phase 3: Plant deck
For phase 3 of the project, we were required to enable maintenance team access to the plant deck area. This required several things:
- A plant deck tower
- CAT ladder
- Plant deck access gate
- Roof top access walkway
For the roof top access walkway we used open steel flooring with 20mm ball proof grating, this is used for maintenance access meaning if any tools get dropped they won’t fall into the gaps when they are working up there. We also provided galvanised railings for extra safety.
We also made a plant room tower, for this we have used tube clamp fittings, a big foot support system which is a versatile, non- penetrative rooftop support systems designs to safely hold HVAC, electrical and other plant equipment on roofs.
We have then covered it with a GRP grating system to make it safe for standing.

The Result
From structural steelwork to specialist fire protection and access solutions, our team was proud to support the successful construction of this important new hospital unit.
Projects like St George’s Hospital demonstrate the value of combining expert fabrication, careful planning and experienced site installation. By managing both the manufacturing and fitting in-house, we delivered a seamless service that met the high standards expected on a major healthcare development.
We look forward to sharing more images from this project as construction continues.
