This wasn’t simply a steel fabrication project. It was about creating safe, reliable and long-lasting structures that will support patients, visitors and healthcare professionals for many years to come.
From the earliest construction stages through to the installation of staircases, our team managed every aspect of the fabrication and site fitting, ensuring quality and precision at every step.
The Challenge
Constructing a new hospital unit requires exceptional attention to detail. Every structural element must meet strict safety standards while supporting a busy healthcare environment where reliability is critical.
The project was delivered over multiple phases, with each stage presenting its own technical challenges. Our role was to provide expertly fabricated steelwork that not only met the engineering requirements but also helped keep the build progressing efficiently.

Our team fabricated and installed a wide range of steelwork throughout the project, including:
Intumescent Painted Structural Steel
We fabricated and applied intumescent paint to structural steelwork at our own facility before installation.
This specialist coating provides enhanced fire protection by expanding when exposed to high temperatures. The protective layer helps insulate the steel, delaying structural failure and giving occupants valuable extra time to evacuate safely in the event of a fire.
Phase One Structural Steel
During the first phase of the project, we fabricated a steel structure designed to be incorporated directly into the concrete construction.
This early-stage framework provided vital structural support and helped lay the foundations for the new hospital building.
Bespoke Staircase Design and Installation
One of the standout elements of the project was the design, fabrication and installation of several staircases.
A key staircase was fully fabricated in our workshop before being transported to Hull, where our experienced fitting team assembled it. From there, it was delivered to St George’s Hospital and lifted directly into position by crane.
Completing as much work as possible off-site reduced installation time on site, improved efficiency and ensured the staircase was installed accurately with minimal disruption to the wider construction programme.
Designed with Safety at the Forefront
Every staircase was carefully designed with the demands of a modern hospital in mind.
Fire safety was a primary consideration, but the staircases also needed to be wide enough to accommodate high volumes of people during an emergency evacuation. Importantly, they were designed to allow hospital beds to pass through safely, ensuring patients with limited mobility could also be evacuated if required.
It’s this level of planning and attention to detail that helps create healthcare environments that are both practical and safe.
