Two Js Metalwork

If you have a steelwork or architectural metal feature at your property (the latter being custom-fabricated metal used for both functional and aesthetic purposes), whatever the setting, you’ll want to ensure you get the most from these elements in terms of longevity, operation and appearance.

Here’s how you can go about doing that:

  • Set a regular maintenance regime

Cleaning and extensive inspection should ideally take place annually in standard settings and at least every few months, if not more often, in coastal or industrial environments.

Aim to identify problems such as rust spots early on, particularly at joints and so on, and anywhere where dampness could collect. Check paint and finishes for chipping, scratches, blistering or peeling.

Seemingly small issues can worsen surprisingly quickly. So take prompt action. With rust spots, you can lift them with a wire brush before applying a corrosion-resistant primer and then recoating. You may need professional restoration for serious damage.

Cracks and loose bolts also need to be sorted. Look for indications of these problems and rectify as necessary. Any drainage systems should be clear of debris to stop water from accumulating.

Make sure you oil all moving parts regularly, too.

  • Frequent, thorough cleaning

This shifts dirt, salt deposits and any pollutants which could lead to long-term damage. Warm water with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner are all you need. Work in the direction of the grain of the metal and you won’t scratch the surface noticeably. Rinse thoroughly afterwards or you may leave water spots.

Things to steer clear of include abrasive cleaners, steel wool and high-pressure washes, as well as stringent chemicals. Don’t use anything containing chlorides on stainless steel.

  • Be aware of your environment

In coastal areas, as mentioned, more frequent cleaning is necessary to shift salt deposits. Ventilate well and practise good moisture control to stop rust and condensation from building up.

  • Have good systems in place for documentation

All inspections, cleaning schedules and repairs should be logged in detail, along with a list of the materials you’ve used. This helps you notice patterns of possible problems and plan costs and may be useful if you ever need to make a warranty claim for your metal piece.

The good news is that, if you follow these general guidelines, you retain your features’ aesthetic appeal and structural integrity for decades into the future.
