What is a CAD drawing?

A CAD or computer-aided drawing is a digital file detailing the construction of a building, object or machine part. It’s a replacement for the traditional paper blueprint, with precise computer graphics in 2D or 3D.

Engineers, architects and project managers, along with those working in manufacturing, plan, share and build projects using these files. Teams can see exactly what they’re constructing and, crucially, pinpoint issues before they become costly on-site headaches.

Clarity, speed and accuracy all improve, while the flawless prototypes from CAD drawings also allow everyone to work from the same set of digital plans, enhancing collaboration and coordination.

How CAD drawings help save money

  • Avoids wastage of costly materials

Due to the very precise nature of the measurements, you don’t over-order raw materials that you end up not using. (This is obviously an environmental benefit, too.) Cutting is also very exact to the last millimetre, minimising potentially costly leftover metal.

Equally, the spot-on estimation of materials means accurate volumes, so equally you won’t fall short of what you need, which could hold up a project.

Essentially, nothing arrives on site the wrong size plus you eliminate any potential for guesswork. And you can align even early budgets with what your site actually needs.

  • Eliminating rework and changes to orders

For example, if any beams, wires or pipes overlap, you get to identify these ahead of construction starting thanks to 3D collision tools.

You also catch any design niggles or flaws on a screen rather than during the production process itself. This is known as interference checking.

At the same time, you will need to do fewer (if any) emergency alteration once construction is actively underway.

  • A single point of reference

By having just one, trusted design file, you avoid any disagreements among stakeholders or clashes between disciplines, which can end up being pretty costly.

    • Speedier approvals and procurement

By having ‘clean’, compliant paperwork at an earlier stage, you speed up the process of securing local authority permits and permissions where these are needed.

Equally, unambiguous documentation results in faster procurement and delivery cycles from vendors.

    • Enhanced collaboration and communication

With standardised CAD files, contractors, suppliers and others all see exactly the same information. Additionally, digital files transfer immediately via cloud networks, which again rules out delays.

It’s also straightforward for teams working remotely to amend files digitally, leading to quicker approval cycles.

After all, poor communication and miscommunication are key factors behind costly project reworks.

    • Faster manufacturing speed

CAD files feed straight into 3D printers and CNC machines without the need for manual data entry. (CNC machines, by the way, or Computer Numerical Control models, use a computer to read pre-programmed digital code telling them how to move tools, set speeds and cut raw materials into accurate shapes with no human intervention.)

It’s also possible to reuse the CAD templates and modify them, so that you repurpose existing tools rather than beginning each project from scratch.

Finally, with correct dimensions and sequences, you take away guesswork that can lead to failures in safety or compliance, saving both time and money all round.

CAD Drawings and Detailing for Metalwork

CAD drawings with laser-sharp precision from Two J’s Metalwork

At Two J’s Metalwork, we’re specialists in devising exceptional solutions in metalwork, which we’ve been doing for more than a decade, for small and large schemes across Sussex and beyond.

Our services include high-quality CAD drawing and detailing for metalwork so that each project we embark on is as precisely accurate as it can be.

It means there’s always a precise digital blueprint before fabrication even gets underway. So every piece of steelwork our team produces has a corresponding 3D CAD drawing, representing the design visually and extremely clearly.

And we love how this boosts customer understanding while streamlining the whole process.

Read our website and get in touch whether your needs involve a large-scale commercial scheme or a far smaller bespoke residential project.

We’ll be delighted to offer expert advice and a detailed quote, or just to answer any questions you may have.
